Almost Bah Humbug
Seems that the madness has already begun! Out last night (a nice dinner in Browns with Helen and her Dad), out tonight with my uncle and out tomorrow night with Carl and his work colleagues. There seems little time to put up the tree, grab drinks with loved ones and friends, do the shopping, bake a ham (well, I am actually going to cook it in Coca Cola – it sounds bizarre but is delicious) and welcome the mother-in-law to a clean and tidy house!
WHY DO WE DO IT TO OURSELVES??
Seems to me that the fundamental idea of Christmas has been ploughed under a mountain of consumer goods. Oxford Street (I work just off it and can see it out of my window) is a sea of people rabidly spending money. Seems obscene but yet I am still pressured into buying presents that will be forgotten in a few days for people that I care for.
Yes, I am enjoying eating nice food and spending some time away from work and with Carl and his family, but it all seems excessive to me.
Maybe I should just concentrate on trying to book our holiday to South Africa in Feb. Flights are nearly booked - eeeeeeeeeeeeek!
